The Sword of Damacles

Question: The first virtual reality (VR) headset was invented in 1968 - what was it called?

Answer: The Sword of Damocles

Created by computer scientist Ivan Sutherland and his student Bob Sproull, it displayed simple wireframe graphics and is considered the first step toward modern VR technology.

The name is a reference to the ancient Greek story of Damocles, where a sword was hung by a single hair over Damocles' head to symbolize the constant danger faced by those in power. Similarly, the VR headset was so heavy and awkward that it had to be suspended from the ceiling above the user's head in a way that felt precarious and intimidating.

Why "Dooley?"

Inspired by the founder's alma mater - Emory University's spirit mascot, Dooley represents the voice of the student body. And when Dooley shows up to your class, you can count on a fun time and the rest of the day off!
