Daily Dooley

The first search engine

Your daily dose of tech trivia!

Question: What was the name of the first internet search engine, which was created in 1990?

Answer: Archie

Created by Alan Emtage, a student at McGill University in Montreal.

Archie wasn’t quite like modern search engines—it indexed directory listings of files stored on anonymous FTP (File Transfer Protocol) servers, helping users find specific files. It was a major step toward the searchable web we know today.

Why "Dooley?"

Inspired by the founder's alma mater - Emory University's spirit mascot, Dooley represents the voice of the student body. And when Dooley shows up to your class, you can count on a fun time and the rest of the day off!
