Daily Dooley

Nokia

Your daily dose of tech trivia!

Question: Before becoming a tech company, what did Nokia originally produce in the 1800s?

Answer: Paper products

Founded in 1865 in Finland by engineer Fredrik Idestam. It began as a paper mill operation on the banks of the Nokianvirta River — which later inspired the company's name. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Nokia expanded into several industries, including rubber products, cables, and electronics.

By the 1960s and 70s, Nokia began shifting into telecommunications equipment, and by the 1990s, it became globally known for its mobile phones. So yes — long before Nokia was a cellphone giant, it was literally in the business of making paper and rubber boots!

Why "Dooley?"

Inspired by the founder's alma mater - Emory University's spirit mascot, Dooley represents the voice of the student body. And when Dooley shows up to your class, you can count on a fun time and the rest of the day off!
