When Microsoft launched Windows 95 in August 1995, it wasn’t just a software release—it was a cultural event. To make sure the world paid attention, Microsoft made a bold move: they licensed “Start Me Up” by The Rolling Stones for the launch campaign.
It cost them a reported $3 million, but it was worth it. The song’s famous opening riff became the soundtrack to one of the most successful product launches in tech history. Commercials showed off the brand-new Start button, and suddenly, millions of PC users had a tune stuck in their heads every time they booted up their computer.
Windows 95 went on to sell 7 million copies in just the first 5 weeks, setting records and cementing Microsoft as the dominant force in personal computing. And thanks to The Stones, it might just be the only operating system launch that felt like a rock concert.
