Intel released the world's first commercial microprocessor, the Intel 4004, in 1971. It was originally designed for a Japanese calculator company called Busicom, which needed a set of integrated chips for its calculators. Instead of building multiple chips for different functions, Intel engineers Federico Faggin, Marcian “Ted” Hoff, and Stanley Mazor developed a single-chip processor capable of executing a variety of general-purpose computing tasks.

The Intel 4004 had a 4-bit architecture, could process 60,000 instructions per second, and contained 2,300 transistors—an incredible breakthrough at the time. This invention essentially kicked off the microprocessor revolution, laying the foundation for the personal computer industry and much of the modern digital world.
